JOLLY GOOD SHOW

Young Texan Justin Leonard overcame a five-stroke deficit, birdied two of the last three holes and stepped on Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik to win the British Open.

Leonard’s victory meant that along with Tiger Woods in the Masters and Ernie Els in the U.S. Open, the winners of the three major championships this year are all in their 20s.

Generation X-cellent.

TRAVELING SQUAD

The Bears head to Ireland on Monday, accompanied by 20 media people. That’s less than half the number of media types who followed the Bears to London in 1986.

That’s about right. Less than half the media contingent for a team that won less than half its games.

PINHEAD PATROL

The Horace Grant All-Star Basketball Game for charity was canceled. The announcement, which comes six weeks before the Aug. 31 game in Orlando, will cost the organizers about $50,000 for a year’s worth of work and will deny the March of Dimes at least $100,000.

Reason for the cancellation? Grant couldn’t make himself available. No lie.

Must’ve thought it was a playoff game.

BIG PITCH

The White Sox beat up on the Baltimore Orioles in a 10-2 victory, sparked by Frank Thomas’ homer and four RBIs. But the key was starter Jaime Navarro, who gave the Sox nine innings and a victory.

Navarro, of course, has done that before. Difference is, it sometimes takes him three weeks instead of three hours.

CUBBIE BLEW

The Cubs gave up five home runs, three doubles and 12 hits in all. They lost to Colorado 9-5, the first team to do so in nine games.

The Cubs have been so bad for so long, I don’t have a good joke. I apologize. I’ll try to do better next time. Please move on to the next item. Thank you.
