Justin Gimelstob became the latest player to oust Andre Agassi in a first-round match this year, taking out the seventh seed 7-5, 6-2 in the Infiniti Open in Los Angeles. Agassi, the former world No. 1 but now ranked 32nd, has lost in the first round six times in eight tournaments this year, with just six wins in 14 singles matches.
Basketball: Cynthia Cooper broke her own WNBA record with 32 points and added six assists in the Houston Comets’ 77-69 victory over the Mercury in Phoenix. Cooper, who set the previous mark with a 30-point performance Friday night at Sacramento, was 8 for 12 from the field. Tina Thompson added 15 points for the Comets (9-5), who made 12 of 17 three-pointers. Michele Timms led Phoenix (8-4) with 24 points.
– The Utah Starzz, led by a league-record seven three-pointers from center Elena Baranova, surprised the Liberty 78-71 in New York. It was the first loss in seven home games for New York (12-3). Utah (4-11) has the WNBA’s worst record.
Hockey: Businessman John Spano, whose deal to purchase the New York Islanders fell apart, will surrender Wednesday in Long Island on fraud charges, according to the New York Daily News. Spano–who forfeited ownership July 11 after failing to make scheduled payments–made fraudulent claims to obtain the $80 million loan from Fleet Bank that he used to buy the team from John Pickett in April, according to Newsday.
Media: ABC has moved the telecast date for its replay of the Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight to Aug. 14 to avoid airing it at the same time as TVKO’s Aug. 7 pay-per-view telecast of the Montell Griffin-Roy Jones Jr. light-heavyweight WBC title fight.
