The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, one of the earliest examples of the Richardson Romanesque architectural style in the city, was designated an official landmark by the Chicago City Council on Wednesday.
The church and parish house at 201 S. Ashland Ave., were built in 1885.
The altar has four finely detailed mosaic glass panels by Louis Tiffany and portions of windows also made by Tiffany wrap the perimeter of the sanctuary, according to Ward Miller of Vinci-Hamp Architects Inc., the project architects.
Like many older churches it is in need of repairs, and its congregation of about 350 has agreed to begin raising funds to pay for the work, said Miller, whose firm will be the architects for the project.
“We’ll be catching up with 50 years of deferred maintenance,” Miller said. “Time, air pollution and auto exhaust have taken a toll on the facade.”
