Saturday Night Live writer and South Side native Cindy Caponera is back with her second one-woman show, “The Debutante Ball.” Caponera spent 12 years on Chicago stages before moving to New York in 1993, and her first solo show here, “Against the Grain” at Second City e.t.c., won rave reviews. In her current production, Caponera is in fine form, slipping effortlessly and hilariously between such characters as the cursing, Jesus-invoking Aunt Joan, who carries on one-sided conversations with her husband, Sharkey, a cancer patient with a recent tracheotomy, and her niece while preparing for a back-yard barbecue; the addle-brained Brownie leader who leaves her troop unattended at the VFW hall while she goes off to get drunk with her ex-convict ex-boyfriend; and the nauseatingly earnest waitress-poet convinced every sentence she speaks is a work of art. “The Debutante Ball” runs Thursdays-Sundays through Aug. 10 at the Victory Gardens Theater, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. Tickets are $20. For more information, call 773-871-3000.
