Regarding the editorial on when the Illinois secretary of state will begin issuing new license plates (“Try again on new license plates,” July 29):

Why not design the new license plates and begin distributing them now for all of the “new” plates being issued? Then have the oldest license plates replaced over three years until all plates are of the new design.

Many states issue specialty plates for college teams and similar interests. Illinois should do that also.

Illinois presently issues specialty plates for many different purposes, but they can only be displayed for a limited time (90 days?). It seems peculiar to me that all of these specialty plates are made of the same materials as the current Illinois license plates, but we can’t continue to use them, despite the very poor condition of my 19-year-old plates.

The process is obviously available to make new plates. We should begin the transition to a selection of new plates now.
