IMC Global Inc., Northbrook, said it began making food-grade salt at its expanded potash-producing facility in Hersey, Mich. The Northbrook-based maker of potash and other crop fertilizers said its decision to enter the food-salt business represents a natural extension of its white potash business. IMC said it expects to produce 300,000 tons of salt in its first year and 600,000 tons a year within three years. About 5 million tons of food-grade salt are mined in the U.S. each year.
