In the first paragraph of Paul Sullivan’s coverage of the July 24 Cubs-Rockies game, he states that the game was “meaningless.” If it is meaningless, why is the Tribune paying Sullivan to go to Denver to cover the game, and why is the Tribune even bothering to report on such games?
Unfortunately, Sullivan’s attitude is typical of most Tribune sportswriters, who seem to believe that unless a championship is on the line, there is no value to having a game played. What appears to be missing is a true love of the game itself and a mature attitude that sees value in competitive sports, not just when your team is winning.
The Tribune’s sportswriters, with the notable exception of Jerome Holtzman, seem to be the unhappiest group of guys on the planet, and that doesn’t make them fun to read. Come on, folks, stop the incessant whining and try educating your readers.
