Two proteges of a Beijing mayor who was ousted because of corruption have been sentenced to at least 10 years in prison for accepting bribes, according to the official news media.
Tie Ying and Huang Jicheng are the latest in a series of officials punished in a scandal that led to the 1995 suicide of Deputy Mayor Wang Baosen, who reputedly killed himself after learning he was the target of an embezzlement investigation.
The Communist Party is in the midst of a multi-year campaign against graft and abuses of office by officials that have undercut public support for the party.
Tie, the Beijing secretary-general from 1992 to 1995, was punished for taking $51,000 in bribes, the Beijing Daily newspaper said Friday. She was sentenced to 15 years.
Huang, ex-head of the city administrative council, was convicted of taking $26,000 in bribes and received a 10-year sentence, the newspaper said.
Former Beijing Mayor Chen Xitong was purged following accusations he allowed embezzlement and bribery.
