No need for the kindergartners at Cowlishaw School to feel nervous about being new this year. Everybody at Cowlishaw in Naperville is new.

When the 5th graders lead tours through the school at registration on Tuesday, it will be the first time any of the students and their parents have seen the new school, finished over the summer.

Kindergartners through 5th graders will come from various neighborhoods and two other schools, May Watts and Indian Plains, to make up the Cowlishaw student body.

Although carpet was still being laid in July and library shelves were not in place, Cowlishaw PTA president Susan Andrews and her board spent the summer preparing for a school year themed “Building a Foundation,” while building their own PTA. Monetary gifts from other PTAs in the district, especially from May Watts and Indian Plains, will start them off.

Since a large number of students and principal Gerrie Grey came from Indian Plains School, they voted last spring on school colors of royal blue, green and black, and a school mascot, the Cowlishaw Koala. Students can show off those colors by buying Cowlishaw T-shirts at registration.

“There’s a lot of sharing of ideas when people come from different schools, but everyone’s excited about Cowlishaw and wanting to own it as soon as possible,” said Andrews.
