The first phase of redevelopment of the former Glenview Naval Air Station could begin by late fall, engineers and Glenview officials told about 20 people attending an informational meeting Saturday.

In the North Shore’s largest-ever single development, the base will be converted to residential, business and recreational uses after the Navy gives 1,100 acres of the property to the village.

The first phase of the project includes infrastructure work, such as clearing runways, and earthwork to create a lake.

Engineers told the group that the village will need to make major improvements to its water system to handle the development. Those improvements would include a new water main for the area, larger pumps at the Laramie Avenue station, new pumps and reservoirs at Pfingsten Road and West Lake Avenue, and expanding the capacity at the Rugen Road pumping station.

Assistant village manager Matthew Carlson said developers involved in the project will be asked to contribute to the cost of the improvements.
