The two recent boating deaths that occurred within sight of Navy Pier once again point out the need for an increased awareness of boating safety.

In all likelihood, had the two victims in the separate accidents been wearing personal flotation devices, they would not have died. I think it’s time to enact laws that would require boat operators to pass boating safety classes. A boater armed with quality safety training and a personal commitment to being a safe boater will prevent deaths and accidents. If we allow the status quo to continue, these accidents will keep happening.
