With summer almost gone, here’s the 411 on a guy who took us seriously in June and has lots to show for it.

Peter L., 12, of Chicago read our story on how to make some bucks over summer break and wasted no time getting started. When we talked to him, he was averaging about $70 a week.

So what’s his secret? Nothing heavy – just good, old-fashioned action, and lots of it. Peter washed cars, swept driveways, painted porches, pulled weeds, sold lemonade and best of all, worked as a chamber maid in a bed and breakfast. That means making beds, tidying up and cleaning bathrooms (yep, showers, bathtubs, toilets and sinks). “It’s just like cleaning your room, only doing it really well,” he reports.

Where did all those McJobs come from? Peter papered his hood with fliers he printed on his computer, and the rest is history. And he used some common sense, such as setting up his lemonade stand on the busiest street near his house. He averaged about two jobs a day, and hired his buddies to help him (but he didn’t boss-out on them; all earnings were an even split minus supplies).

And since all work and no play can be boring, he cooled out for a few weeks in Michigan, then went to camp for two more weeks. “But that still leaves a few more weeks at the end of summer for work,” he says. After all, a kid’s got to have a stash of cash for school.
