The Regional Transportation Plan Committee has decided to conduct an 18- to 30-month study of the Illinois Highway 53 corridor in Lisle and Woodridge to recommend improvements.

The committee’s decision, reached last week, gives the Illinois Department of Transportation authority to study the 9-mile stretch to improve commuting in DuPage County.

Weeks before the vote, residents and officials of Lisle and Woodridge said they didn’t want to be a part of the study, because it would give IDOT the authority to expand the road, contributing to more traffic, congestion and pollution in the two communities.

But Rich Starr, a system engineer for IDOT, said that Illinois 53 won’t be expanded to six lanes from four.
