John J. Steyer, 85, a retired cabinet maker, died Wednesday at the Medina Nursing Center in Durand, Ill. A native of Yugoslavia, Mr. Steyer came to the United States in 1927. He lived in Oak Park for many years and also lived in Phoenix. He had lived in Durand for two years. Mr. Steyer made cabinets for The Dettmer Companies in Chicago until retiring in 1977. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve; three sons, Robert, Walter and William; two daughters, Joan Volpe and Barbara Carini; two stepsons, Paul and John Olinick; a stepdaughter, Virginia Borth; a sister; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 606 W. Main St., Durand.
