Nelson Estes, 82, a longtime resident of Chicago’s Southeast Side, died Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital. A native of Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Estes graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in meteorology. Unable to find a job in his chosen field, he took a job as the manager of the children’s department at Meyer Bros., a department store at 4805 S. Ashland Ave. He worked there for 50 years before retiring at age 72. Mr. Estes worked for a short time as a meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Service in Philadelphia. Survivors include two daughters, Eileen Betley and Merryl Weber; a son, Milton; and four grandchildren.Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Piser Chapel, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd., Skokie.
