About 20 residents in Carol Stream School District 93 brainstormed with the school board Wednesday night at the first of a series of public hearings on how to deal with school overcrowding.
The school board slated the sessions in an effort to get an idea of what taxpayers want to do in the face of a looming the space crunch. Though a number of alternative proposals are being considered, they vary widely in scope and cost, officials said.
School officials listed a series of options: keeping the status quo, going to a year-round school calendar, building a new 25-classroom school and additions to other schools or constructing a 32-classroom school.
New construction would require a bond issue referendum this fall or next spring to raise the needed funds, officials said.
Cost estimates range from $3 million to $15 million, unless the school district decides to do nothing at all.
The district is one of the largest in DuPage County, with some 5,200 pupils. Schools are located in Carol Stream, Bartlett, Bloomingdale and Hanover Park.
