But You Probably Won’t Be Allowed to Sing …
Job description: Need 25 men, 12 women and 8 boys. Be a guard, slave, prisoner, plague victim or general Cretan. Toga-type costumes will be provided.
Face it, not everyone gets to be Placido Domingo, but here is a good chance to be very close to the action, in fact, in the middle of the action, when the Lyric Opera’s production of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” (which is set in Crete) opens Oct. 18.
The Lyric is looking for supers (supernumerary is the formal term), and if you get the job, it pays $10 per rehearsal and performance, opens the door to all dress rehearsals at the Lyric and sounds, at the very least, like quite a hoot.
Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday backstage at the Lyric in Rehearsal Room 550. Enter through the stage door at Wacker Drive and Washington Street. Initial rehearsals will be Wednesday and Thursday, with more scheduled for October.
Think of it this way: If it doesn’t work out, you can honestly say, “I couldn’t even get a job as a plague victim!” which could be quite a party stopper.
