Charles E. Helmold, 58, a retired Chicago Fire Department lieutenant, died Wednesday at his Michigan cottage. Mr. Helmold began his career as a Chicago firefighter in 1973. He retired from Engine 92 in the Mt. Greenwood neighborhood in April 1996. A longtime resident of Mt. Greenwood who recently moved to Orland Park, Mr. Helmold inspired many relatives to serve the city, said his wife, Mary Alice. His son, Brian; nephew, Jim McDonald; and son-in-law, Mike Ciara; are all Chicago firefighters; and his son, Kevin, is a city paramedic. Other survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Ciara and Jeanne Helmold; his mother, Lucille; a sister; and eight grandchildren. Mass will be said at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Cajetan Catholic Church, 11234 S. Artesian Ave., Chicago.
