It hurts to be homeless, and for millions of unwanted pets every year, it also means death. In America, shelter workers put to death approximately a million animals a month. Of those animals who are killed, half are puppies and kittens.
Aug. 16 is “Homeless Animals’ Day,” recognized nationally to promote public awareness of the tragedy of pet overpopulation. The animals’ tragedy is an American tragedy because people are the cause of the slaughter. Accidental and deliberate breeding of animals causes pet overpopulation. The animals are helpless to prevent their sad fate.
“Homeless Animals’ Day” also enlightens the public to the suffering of shelter workers whose job it is to put to death unwanted and homeless animals.
How can you help stop the slaughter? Spay or neuter your pet, and encourage your family and friends to do the same with their pets. Spaying and neutering is painless, and it does have health benefits for your pet. Also, when you’re ready to adopt a pet, adopt from a shelter. Anyone who has adopted a shelter animal will tell you–shelter animals make the best pets!
