I whole-heartedly support Mayor Richard Daley’s call for more city-suburban cooperation to address Chicagoland’s most pressing issues. Recognizing our mutual wish to strengthen this region as a whole should begin to establish an ongoing dialogue between government, business and community leaders.
We have a great deal to offer one another. Many people are unaware that DuPage County continues to rank near the top in the nation for new job growth. We can share ideas and resources with disadvan-taged neighborhoods in the city and help community leaders promote an economic rebirth in these areas.
The population in the collar counties is becoming racially and ethnically diverse. City leaders can teach us how to maximize the new opportunities presented by a diverse populace. Education, transportation and public safety represent just a few more issues we can collectively address.
After all, we share a love of the Chicago Bulls, the magnificent skyline, suburban megamalls and good restaurants. Our ability to agree on more important matters should transcend city-suburban lines of demarcation.
