He underwent special military training at Princeton University, studying tropical diseases, and later was assigned to the Presidio in Monterey, Cal., a military complex, where he learned Japanese. Dr. Johnson’s last tour of duty was on the battleship U.S.S. Nevada in the South Pacific. After the war, he remained in the Navy reserves for 35 years retiring as a full commander. During his career as a dentist, he had three offices in Chicago and one in Skokie. His grandson, Matthew, said, “He was generous, personable, calm when needed, steadfast in his values . . . and a humble man.” Other survivors include two sons, Wayne and Brian; and another grandson, Andrew. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Winnetka Covenant Church, 1200 Hibbard Rd., Wilmette.
