Statistics tell us that approximately 10 percent of every work force suffers from some sort of substance abuse. Often this is higher among professionals. Thus it is amazing to me why there is no drug-test requirement for teacher certification. Thousands of our high school and college youths were asked to take drug tests just to hold summer jobs. Businesses across Chicago require drug tests before employment.

It seems to me that those who daily shape, mold and interact with our most precious resource–our children–should certainly be required to do the same.

Drug testing or random testing of teachers would allow any drug problems to be found and assist the teacher in getting the necessary help. Drug testing would also send a powerful message to the children they teach that they are there to operate, support and build a drug-free school.

I believe that drug testing should be a requirement for certification of teachers. Our children deserve as much!
