O.J. Simpson’s lawyer suggested publicly for the first time Thursday that he’s willing to negotiate with Fred Goldman’s legal team about payment of a huge court judgment.

Attorney Ronald Slates said the first step before negotiations could begin would have to be a reduction of the $33.5 million award.

“There probably has to be a decision at the appellate level on the dollar figure,” Slates said.

Slates commented after a brief hearing in which Goldman’s lawyer, Gary Caris, pressed his case for seizure of a $20,000 piano from Simpson’s house. Superior Court Judge David Perez said he will hear testimony Monday from Simpson’s mother and other relatives who claim the instrument was a gift to Simpson’s mother and not one of her son’s assets.
