A change is needed in the state high school basketball tournament. Except for the Chicago public high schools, every team in every conference has a shot at the state title, even after a poor season. Chicago is allowed one team with a bye to the supersectionals as a lollipop. Big deal. They could make it that far on their own. How about if the eight teams that make the quarterfinals in Chicago are eligible for the state tournament?
One other suggestion: Don’t have teams from the same conference play one another until it is unavoidable. This will show us which conference is the strongest.
