Why is it that John Schmidt, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, can flout laws that would get anyone else thrown in jail? I am referring to the picture (Metro, Aug. 27) of Mr. Schmidt waving a rifle in a Chicago park.
How many laws were broken in this theatrical display? For openers, Illinois law requires that a firearm be (1) in a case, (2) unloaded and (3) not immediately accessible. It is obvious that Mr. Schmidt was in violation of this law. In addition, there are Chicago laws prohibiting firearms in the parks.
If any other citizen had displayed such contempt for the law, he would be in jail right now. Perhaps Mr. Schmidt believes that politicians are above the law, but I don’t.
