In more and more companies, the term collaboration is being used to describe the process of programming and the applications programming generates. Our September Special Report examines collaborative programming in two ways: the finished products and the tools for creating those products, focusing on many of the crucial is sues facing programmers, developers, and engineers. Here’s what to expect:

September 5: The Usual Suspects. Microsoft and Netscape want you to collaborate on programming via the Web. Does either company have a clue about what’s really needed?

September 12: Whatever happened to Internet Phone? VocalTec pioneered collaboration on the Net via telephony. We’ll examine the latest developments of this Web innovation.

September 19: Version Control. The more people working on a project, the more chances there are for colleagues to step on one another’s toes. Are any tools really solving this potentially volatile problem?

September 26: In the trenches. Programmers at several major Chicago companies talk about how collaborative technologies are moving them forward-and holding them back.
