Apple Computer Inc., in an apparent change of heart, agreed to continue to let Umax Data Systems Inc. sell Macintosh-compatible personal computers.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple, which earlier this week said it would no longer continue to license its technology to clone manufacturers, will give Taiwan-based Umax a license to make Apple’s next-generation computer technology.

Umax said it had agreed to pay higher licensing fees to Apple and to concentrate on growing the Macintosh personal computer market in China and at lower price segments.
