Edward A. Backus, 86, a resident of Park Ridge for 38 years, died Aug. 29 at the Ballard Nursing Home in Des Plaines. Born in Chicago, Mr. Backus was the retired owner of George Hofbauer Inc., which specialized in tool and knife grinding. Mr. Backus also was a Republican election judge in Park Ridge’s Ward 3. He was a past grand knight and former secretary of Maria Council 4836 of the Knights of Columbus. He was past president of the Over and Under Club at the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Catholic Church in Park Ridge. Survivors include his wife, Lucille; a son, Alan; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in Mary, Seat of Wisdom Catholic Church, 920 Grandville Ave., Park Ridge.
