Coming into the season, Rich East coach Bob Lombardi knew what to expect out of his offense. With left-handed Division I prospect Walter Young throwing the ball, who wouldn’t?
But who knew what to expect out of John White?
Playing in just his second varsity game, the 6-foot-3-inch senior tailback ran for touchdowns of 7, 23 and 60 yards Saturday in the Rockets’ 49-26 victory over Tinley Park (1-1) in Park Forest.
“We do expect to move the football and put points on the board,” said Lombardi, whose 2-0 team has scored 83 points in two games. “Offense is very exciting at our place. Our kids expect to score.”
White, who transferred from Marian Catholic, where he had played freshman football, concentrated solely on basketball his sophomore and junior years at Rich East.
“We don’t try to pressure kids into playing,” Lombardi said. “We do have pretty good tradition, and I think it finally got to him.”
The Rockets, who led 42-7 at the half, got on the board early when Richard McNutt picked off a Tinley Park pass and ran 48 yards for the touchdown. A 60-yard TD pass from Young to Maurice Williams, White’s two touchdown runs and a 2-yard plunge by McNutt completed the first-half barrage.

Loyola 14, St. Viator 0: It was another tough day for St. Viator (0-2) and QB Jarrett Payton, limited to 37 yards passing and 20 yards rushing by No. 15 Loyola (2-0).
