After losing all four exhibition games and the season opener, Carolina finally picked up a victory without scoring a touchdown. John Kasay kicked his third field goal of the fourth quarter as time ran out.
“An ugly win is just as good as a pretty win,” said Carolina quarterback Steve Beuerlein.
Thanks to a stifling defensive performance for the second week in a row, the Falcons held a 6-0 lead after three quarters, limiting the Panthers to 153 yards while Morten Andersen kicked two field goals.
But Beuerlein, relying heavily on tight end Wesley Walls (147 yards on seven receptions), put together three drives in the fourth that moved into Kasay’s range.
