The Sept. 4 Tempo article on Internet sites linked to children’s TV programs featured Comedy Central’s “South Park.”
Parents, be aware: “South Park” is animated, and it is about children, but it is in no way intended for children. The series is full of coarse language and risque themes. For those old enough to grasp its adult content, though, it’s also very funny.
“South Park” exploits cable’s more tolerant standards to break through the envelope of social satire already folded, spindled and mutilated by “The Simpsons.” As it should, “South Park” carries the most stringent of the new television ratings: TV-MA. Comedy Central even promotes it as “the reason they invented the V-Chip.” The series is a perfect reminder that the new codes don’t indicate quality, just intended audience, and not all TV is meant for children.
