Congratulations to Georgie Anne Geyer for her column on the population problem, the immigration fiasco and the effect on our environment (Op-Ed, Aug. 29). And congratulations to the Tribune for publishing that column; the Tribune is not noted for support of immigration control and doesn’t view these problems as being very serious.

Geyer does a beautiful job presenting some of the basics that all concerned citizens of this country should be aware of. The negative effects of our rapidly expanding population in the U.S. are readily apparent, literally staring us in the face every day. The leading factor in this unwanted growth is the explosive proliferation of our immigration, both illegal and legal. No reasonable or sensible case can be made for the continuation of the policies that permit this threatening and dangerous course. Population is the problem; all other problems stem from and grow out of it.

The facts are out there for all to study (for example, Paul Ehrlich’s first-rate books and articles) and to act upon. Ms. Geyer’s article is a fearless and very sound call for action. Let’s hope our political leaders can show some of the same initiative and begin a serious approach to this overwhelming situation.
