Daniel G. Beres, 76, a veteran of World War II who took part in the invasion of Normandy, died Monday in the Hospice of the North Shore in Evanston. Mr. Beres, a graduate of Crane Technical High School, served as a U.S. Navy gunner’s mate on LST-523 during D-Day in 1944. He received the Purple Heart and a medal from the French government for injuries sustained when his ship ran into a German mine off Utah beach. After the war, Mr. Beres worked as a motion picture projectionist at the Esquire Theater for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, George; a daughter, Venise; two brothers; a sister; and a grandson. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 2350 W. Dempster St., Des Plaines.
