A request to post the 10 Commandments in the Brown County courthouse has been overwhelmingly rejected.
The County Board voted 17-7 after receiving a letter signed by 16 Green Bay-area clergy members opposing the Christian Family Association’s proposal.
Rabbi Sidney Vineburg spoke against the proposal at the meeting Wednesday, and read a letter from Bishop Robert Banks of the Green Bay Catholic Diocese opposing the plan.
“My problem is not with the 10 Commandments. I am not against placing the 10 Commandments on the courthouse wall. I am against the idea that only the 10 Commandments may be placed on the courthouse wall because this is a Christian nation,” Vineburg said.
Most of the 17 people who spoke favored posting the commandments, and no supervisors spoke at the meeting against the idea.
Board member Guy Zima spoke in favor of the plan. “Why not let the basic laws our country was founded on be displayed? This was a prominent part of our heritage,” he said.
