RESIDENTS OF FLOOD-PRONE AREA UPDATED ON BUYOUT PROGRESS
Linda Mele, a senior project engineer for the DuPage Department of Environmental Concerns, told about 60 residents of the Valley View subdivision near Glen Ellyn Thursday night that 24 of their neighbors have agreed to sell their homes to the county.
The subdivision has experienced extensive flooding over the years, and the county has decided buying and tearing down some of the homes would be the best way to deal with the problem.
Mele said that 47 names are on the county’s buyout list. She said 37 offers have been made and six apparently have been rejected, while the others are pending.
Portions of the subdivision, which is south of Butterfield Road and northwest of Illinois Highway 53 in unincorporated DuPage, most recently flooded in February.
The houses will be demolished.
About 75 percent of the cost of the buyouts will be funded with nearly $5.8 million in federal flood-relief money. The county’s share is about $1.9 million.
