I read your coverage on Sept. 10-12 of the Scottish referendum campaign with great interest. The overseas media coverage of the referendum was enormous, and it is heartening to know that the world is following Scotland’s progress toward self-government.

Only two quibbles with the stories:

First, the Scottish National Party is described as “small” (Sept. 10). In fact, it is Scotland’s second party, with the support of about 25 percent of Scots. As well as having representation in the London Parliament, it has two out of Scotland’s eight seats in the European Parliament (the Conservatives and Liberals have none!) and runs a number of Scotland’s local authorities.

Second, on both days it was stated that the Scottish Parliament will be “barred by statute” from voting for independence. This is not so, and indeed it was the specific reassurance from the British government that there would be no “glass ceiling” built into the proposals that enabled the SNP to give our enthusiastic backing to the `Yes-Yes’ campaign.

These points aside, I greatly enjoyed the coverage and hope that the Tribune will maintain its interest in Scottish affairs in the runup to the new parliament being established.
