The Aurora City Council has voted to boost building permit fees by 5 percent in 1998 and 3 percent each year thereafter until 2002.
Designed to keep up with the increasing cost of inspections, the building permit increases would raise more than $250,000 during the five-year period, officials said.
The increases would not apply to “smaller remodeling projects,” such as decks, garages and sheds, said Mark Anderson, director of inspections and permits.
The council also authorized payment of $25,000 to David M. Griffith & Associates Ltd. to study new impact and transition fees for the city. Both would be charged to developers starting in 1998.
Both the building permit fee increases and the impact and transition fee study are part of a plan by Mayor David Stover to close an anticipated $7 million budget shortfall in 1998.
Stover also has proposed a 0.5 percent sales tax increase and a 5 percent utility tax.
