Frances Barone, 90, died Friday in her Northfield home. Mrs. Barone earned a master’s degree from National College of Education and taught general education to students with learning disabilities at schools in the Chicago area. After her retirement, Mrs. Barone, who was fascinated by oceanography, served as an assistant editor of American Oceanography Magazine, according to her son, Martin. “She wanted to encourage young women to get into the profession,” he said of his mother, whom he described as independent and “a modern woman, even back in the teens and 1920s.” In addition to her son, survivors include four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, 9900 Gross Point Rd., Skokie.
