Phillips Petroleum Co., reacting to strong community criticism, has withdrawn its proposal to sell liquor at a filling station convenience store, company officials told the Batavia Plan Commission.
The proposed business would have replaced the Phillips station at Fabyan Parkway and Illinois Highway 25.
Regarding concerns about noise from a proposed carwash, Phillips agreed to relocate the wash and limit its operating hours hours.
Although substantial changes were made in the design of the building, the Plan Commission was dissatisfied with the result. Commissioner Wendy Lee said the revisions failed to satisfy the “community’s desire for something other than your prototype.”
Phillips representatives agreed to evaluate further design changes. However, consulting engineer George Stock cited budget constraints due to the elimination of revenue that would have been generated by liquor sales.
