Former Sacramento State coach Don Newman, hired in May to help Bill Frieder recruit players for Arizona State, replaced his former boss as head coach Monday.

Athletic Director Kevin White gave Newman the job on an interim basis after failing in attempts to hire a big-name coach following Frieder’s resignation Sept. 10 in the wake of point-shaving allegations.

The Sun Devils went 10-20 last season. The FBI has said neither the school nor its officials are implicated, but a grand jury reportedly is investigating.

Newman, 39, coached Sacramento State to a 20-114 record during five years when the program moved up from NCAA Division II to Division I.
