Question: Why does the Internet take so long when you try to go somewhere?

-Allison, Merrimack, N.H.

Dear Allison: There are lots of “on ramps” to the Information Superhighway (a.k.a. the World Wide Web). From home, most people connect over their telephone line by using a modem. Lots of things, like the speed of your modem, noise on the phone line and a busy Web site, can make downloading take longer. To speed things up, you can buy a faster 33.6K or 56K modem. Read more about it on Web Novice at http://www.webnovice.com/56k.htm or call your Internet Service Provider and ask which is the fastest modem you can use when you connect to the Internet through them.

Question: I keep hearing about cookies on the Internet. Where can I get one?

Paul, Eau Claire, Wis.

Dear Paul: Cookies are programming codes used by some Webmasters to make their Web sites more interactive with the people who come to visit. During their visit, information is gathered and saved on a file by their browser. It’s not dangerous to your computer. Get the whole picture on Cookie Central at http://www.cookiecentral.com/. If you’d rather learn more about hot, fresh-baked cookies, then go to cookie recipes on-line at http://www.CookieRecipe. com/.Ymmm.
