David and Mary Dyche’s comments (“For Dyche clan, perpetuity didn’t last long,” Page 1, Sept. 18) were unfortunate and shallow. If they really had respect for the students and alumni of the institution their grandfather served for so many years, they would hardly characterize Patrick Ryan’s efforts on the university’s behalf as “money . . . rather than service or real effort.” The work that Ryan and his family have done for Northwestern University for years goes well beyond their recent very generous gift.

Furthermore, Ryan Field will be a source of pride for NU for years to come. I sincerely hope that the Dyche family will at some point be able to appreciate the efforts and generosity of Pat Ryan and what he has done for all constituents of the university. As a dedicated Wildcat, William Dyche certainly would have.
