Village officials heard a proposal Tuesday night for construction of more than 3,000 residential units, a golf course and a mix of office and industrial buildings on 520 acres.
Attorney Warren Fuller, representing the developers, said the site had previously been suggested for a Chicago Bears stadium.
The land is owned by the Plote and Origer families and is between Higgins Road and the Northwest Tollway and west of Beverly Road, Fuller said.
The village Planning, Building and Zoning Committee held a special meeting to hear the proposal from Par Development Inc. of East Dundee, and Planned Development and Construction Inc. of South Barrington.
Randall Machelski, senior designer with J.J.R. Inc. of Chicago, said 230 acres of the site, including two manmade lakes, are part of a gravel mining operation that will be turned into a golf course in two years.
Machelski, whose firm was instrumental in planning the nearby Prairie Stone development, said apartments, town homes and condominiums would be built in the northern and western portions and research, office and industrial structures along the tollway.
