The day before your Sept. 10 front-page article on the “dying” of classical music, I discovered that the reason I could no longer hear either of the fine classical music stations WNIB and WFMT was that our cable service, TCI, had taken them off the channel. When I had tried to tune in these two stations over the weekend, all I heard was a loud humming noise.
In checking with a friend who is also a classical music fan, I discovered the truth. TCI would not tell me what had happened, but I have since learned that they did not have room for classical stations on their lines. Sounds like more “dumbing down” of the public. We are too far from these stations to receive them without static and interference.
I do not watch much TV, and most of the stations I do turn to can be received here without cable. What am I paying TCI for? Shouldn’t that company be forced by the Federal Communications Commission to offer a full range of music types?
