The letter titled “Turkey’s atrocities” (Voice, Sept. 18) was apparently signed by people of Greek descent.
One remembers Harvard political science professor Sam Huntington’s recent protest in Foreign Affairs magazine against ethnic groups who try to influence U.S. foreign policy for the particular causes of their root countries, hence damaging vital U.S. interests.
As with any other country in the world, Turkey is confronted with human-rights problems and is sincerely trying to solve them. Important strides have been achieved to date, and the Turkish government is determined to realize further improvements. the struggle with blatant terrorism in Turkey–which has claimed the lives of so many innocent victims, including women and children–is neatly overlooked by the letterwriters.
If the two readers sincerely seek such improvements, then they should as well bring their voice to bear for the rights of Greek nationals of Turkish descent whose plight was recently published in several human-rights violation lists. They will then show us that they do not pursue parochial and purely political aims.
