Steve Metzger’s Sept. 13 letter titled “Scrooge & Co.” was excellent and very informative.

The sum of $24 billion over five years to provide health care for 2 million American children, but a $50 billion tax break for the tobacco industry! Other tax breaks, grants and subsidies to special-interest friends of Congress dwarf any grants or benefits to ordinary Americans.

But why? Could it be that ordinary Americans don’t care? Why do we keep pouring tax dollars in to support these thugs in Congress?

I think I have the answer:

– An increase in illiteracy due to the deterioration of our schools and family values.

– An increase in the percentage of Americans who don’t know who their elected congressmen are.

– The smaller percentage of people voting and/or reading the newspapers. People simply are not informed about issues that affect their lives and fortunes.

This country’s founding was based on the majority of the people having control over their elected representatives, but this is not the case today. A republic such as ours demands this for the people to have real freedom. If our founding fathers were alive today, it would be interesting to hear their comments.
