John G. Shugars, 84, a resident of Palatine for 25 years, died Tuesday in Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Born in Shippensburg, Pa., Mr. Shugars attended Shippensburg University for two years before starting a job with Metropolitan Edison Co. in Easton, Pa. He later made his career in the insurance industry, taking positions with the Mutual Boiler Insurance Co., Montclair, N.J., and then the American International Group in New York City. He later joined Kemper Insurance Co. in Long Grove as an underwriter. Survivors include his wife, Miriam “Mim”; a daughter, Katharine Garis; a son, J. Stephen; a brother; three sisters, and four grandchildren. A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Presbyterian Church of Palatine, 800 E. Palatine Rd., Palatine.
