Frances Mikulec, 89, a former nurse who was decorated for her U.S. Army service in World War II, died Thursday in her home in Des Plaines. Miss Mikulec was born in Czechoslovakia, came to Chicago in 1912 and lived on the West Side before moving to Des Plaines in 1974. She was a nurse at the University of Illinois Hospital for 19 years. As an Army captain during World War II, she helped set up field hospitals in northern France, and she was awarded the Bronze Medal, Victory Medal and American Theater Ribbon. There were no immediate survivors. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Kolssak Funeral Home, 189 S. Milwaukee Ave., Wheeling. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, 8624 W. Normal Ave., Niles.
