Newly retired second baseman Ryne Sandberg deserves recognition not only for his outstanding performance on the field for the Chicago Cubs but for being a leader for fathers and their children.
His willingness to take an active role in promoting the importance of being a caring, involved father draws our applause as much as one of his home runs or brilliant fielding plays.
Sandberg and his children have appeared in TV public service announcements for the Department of Public Aid, telling fathers, “You can score big time if your heart is in the right place.” He has encouraged fathers to spend more time with their children, saying, “Being a great dad means being there when you’re needed.”
Ryne Sandberg is a Most Valuable Parent for helping Illinois to encourage parents to put their children first.
