The Chicago Police Department needs to re-examine its policy on how it bestows line-of-duty benefits on the families of deceased police officers.

I find it somewhat disconcerting that the family of a police officer who is killed while on a date with his girlfriend should receive any special benefits. If these police officers were at home with their families, as they should have been, they would still be alive today. If they thought so little of their families that they threw everything away for some cheap passion, then why should anyone else be concerned about their families?

This should be a wakeup call for all police officers whose conduct is less than honorable. Try to live a life that your family can be proud of. Be a positive example to the community. Remember that you are no better than the predators that you are locking up when you conduct yourself by their standards.

Lest anyone think that this was written by an anti-police zealot, I have been a Chicago police officer for 34 years. I am proud to be a police officer, and I am proud of the vast majority of my brother and sister officers. Let us all try to do something for the better-ment of our communities.
